FAQ
- What?
WrongOpinions is a system that analyses your MyAnimeList profile and uses statistics to automatically detect objectively incorrect anime-related opinions that you hold.
You can kind of think of it as like The Anime Man's "Roasting _____'s HORRIBLE Taste in Anime" series, but for people who Joey doesn't even know exist. (Like you)
WrongOpinions generates a sharable infographic explaining your worst takes, so you can show off your awful taste on social media like some misguided badge of pride.
- Why?
If I'm talking to someone and I find out they watch anime, naturally I ask "What kind of anime do you like?". But this usually has a boring answer. I don't care that you like FMA:B, Violet Evergarden, or Steins;Gate, everyone does.
Someone's taste in anime is better understood by their controversial takes. What's a popular anime that you hate, or an unpopular anime that you love? Maybe I'll learn something about you, or maybe it'll just start a fun argument.
Is that the reason, or just an excuse? Truthfully, a lot of you just have terrible taste and I don't have time to point that out to you individually. Automating the process was necessary.
- Who?
WrongOpinions is made entirely by Yoshi Walsh, a software developer from Sydney, Australia.
- How?
WrongOpinions uses publicly available data from MyAnimeList.
I'll write a blog post in future that explains the technical details.
WrongOpinions is/will be also open source, check out the repo here.
- I don't have a MAL account / my MAL account has no ratings
WrongOpinions works by crunching data. If you can't supply the data, you can't use the site.
Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?
Yeah, that's what you sound like. Come back once you've made an account and rated some shows.
- But I have an AniList / Kitsu list...
It's taken me long enough to get this damned website working for MAL. At the moment I don't have time or motivation to support other data sources.
- I get "Failed to submit job, please try again later"
Does your profile exist? You probably spelt it wrong.
Is it set to private? How do you expect me to read that, huh?
Do you have thousands of shows in your list? Ok first, get a life. Failing that, wait two minutes and try again. If you have a lot of anime in your list it can take us a while to initialise your job. Due to technical limitations we tell you that it's failed if it takes more thousands 30 seconds, but we'll actually keep trying in the background.
None of the above? I don't know, you're probably cursed. You can try submitting an issue on GitHub or consulting an Axis Cult priest.
- I want to know which of my manga opinions are wrong too!
Theoretically this wouldn't be too difficult to support in future. Let me know if it's something you want. Don't hold your breath though, I'm a busy person.
- WrongOpinions was wrong
WrongOpinions isn't perfect. For example, WrongOpinions even seems to think that some of my opinions are wrong, but that's obviously not true. All of my opinions are objectively correct. While I have tried hard to crunch data in ways that are statistically-sound, I had to balance that against entertainment value. WrongOpinions is designed to generate spicy insults, and was balanced such that it should be able to produce something of interest for most users. Additionally, I don't actually have any background in statistics, so I mostly just Googled how to use a lot of these formulas. That's impossible, stop lying. WrongOpinions uses statistics to identify objectively incorrect opinions. As the arbiter of truth, it is incapable of being wrong itself. There will be no second opinions.
